For the majority of the history of orthodontics, improving tooth alignment meant braces. And these braces were all the same. They delivered good results, but left many patients unhappy with the way they looked, felt, and required lifestyle changes throughout treatment.

Patients wanted more options. Luckily, Invisalign hit the market, and now, patients can choose it over traditional braces. Here is what you need to know about this system.

How Does Invisalign Work? +

work

The way Invisalign works is similar to how braces work. In both cases, force is placed on the teeth to move them into a better position. Braces direct force using wires, while Invisalign does so with the shape of the aligners. These aligners are made from medical-grade plastic that is hard enough that the shape alone creates sufficient pressure. Each aligner has a different shape to keep the tooth movement progressing. Once all aligners have been worn, the teeth will have reached their ideal positions.

How Is Invisalign Made? +

made

Invisalign aligners are made based on a 3D digital scan of your dental anatomy. This scan is non-invasive and done using a small wand. It captures the teeth, gums, and bone structure, making it easy for treatment to address your complete needs.

Based on the scan, the journey from current tooth placement to final tooth placement is mapped. Each step becomes an aligner in the series. The orthodontist can tweak this as needed, and before you agree to treatment, you will be able to view the expected final result.

What Makes Invisalign Great? +

Invisalign is one of the most requested forms of treatment. However, there is more that makes it great than the fact that it is invisible when worn. Some of the other benefits of the system include:

  • Less mouth irritation than with braces
  • Treatment is speedier than with many forms of braces
  • There is no impact on speech
  • The aligners can be removed when eating, drinking, brushing, and flossing
  • Fewer office visits are needed

Braces Basics

Just a few decades ago, there was just one type of braces offered at most orthodontic offices. However, that one-size-fits-all approach has now been done away with. Now, most offices have at least two to three options, while Alpan Orthodontics offers six. This means that when you choose our Woodland Hills office, you can easily access treatment that fits your needs and lifestyle.

    Traditional Metal Braces

These are the braces we all picture when we are thinking about orthodontic treatment. However, they are a lot better than they used to be. Our office offers streamlined traditional braces that are made from stainless steel, making them lighter in weight, smaller in profile, and more effective than older versions.

    Clear Braces

If the idea of braces sounds good, but you still feel they are not discreet enough, you can opt for clear braces. There braces use clear brackets that blend in with the teeth. As a result, they are more difficult for others to see, but they still offer the quality results of the original system.

    Gold Braces

Not every patient dislikes having visible braces. However, not everyone looks good in silver. For patients who prefer warmer tones or who just want something a bit more elegant, gold braces are an option. These are traditional braces with a gold coating.

    Invisalign

Not everyone wants to wear braces, even when they need them. That is why Invisalign was invented. This system uses aligners instead of braces, allowing for convenient and discreet treatment. It is highly effective on mild to moderate orthodontic corrections.

Children’s Orthodontic Treatment

What is the age orthodontic treatment should begin?

Well, it depends on the problems the patient presents with. Some people never need orthodontic treatment. Most who do should start around age 12 for the best possible results. However, there are a handful of children who present with orthodontic issues that are so significant, they are best addressed earlier in life. Here is what parents need to know about early treatment for children.

The Importance of Age Seven +

seven

In the world of orthodontics, age seven is a milestone. At this age, most children have a good mix of baby teeth and adult teeth, which means that problems with bite relationships are easy to see. They also have a lot of growing left to do, with the onset of puberty years away. This means that if significant problems are present, the doctor has the option to correct them using appliances and by harnessing bone growth. Being seen at age seven gives the team the largest possible window of opportunity to address severe problems while avoiding invasive measures.

Why Early Treatment Matters +

matters_image

Early treatment is only recommended when a patient presents with severe orthodontic abnormalities. To put it another way, we will only suggest early treatment if we see a young patient who has problems that are great enough to degrade their health and overall quality of life. The reason why treatment should start early is to avoid invasive and painful measures that would be required if treatment does not start until after the onset of puberty. These measures include jaw surgery and tooth extractions.

What Early Treatment Can Accomplish +

  • Guide jaw growth
  • Reduce risk of trauma from protruding teeth
  • Correct poor oral habits
  • Improve facial balance
  • Correct crossbites
  • Guide placement of permanent teeth
  • Make it easier to clean teeth

Early Treatment Appliances

  • Rapid Palatal Expander: An appliance that can widen both the upper and lower arches.
  • Removable Dentofacial-Orthopedic Appliances: This includes bionators, functional appliance, neck gear, head gear, and reverse pull headgear.
  • Lingual Arch: A space maintainer on the lower teeth.
  • Braces: The traditional form of treatment.
  • Invisalign: Used as a braces alternative when suitable.

Adult Orthodontic Treatment

There are many adults who are unhappy with their smiles but think that orthodontic treatment isn’t possible for them. However, there is no upper age limit on being eligible for orthodontic treatment. Here at Alpan Orthodontics in Woodland Hills, about a fifth of all patients are over the age of 21.

What Stops Adults From Seeking Treatment? +

treatment

Each person has their own reasons for not seeking orthodontic care. However, we find there are three reasons that come up quite often with adult patients:

  • They think that orthodontic treatment is only for children and teens.
  • They worry braces will make them appear unprofessional
  • They assume treatment is too large of an expense

We understand why adult patients might think these things. However, they are based in misconceptions. None of these reasons should prevent anyone from getting the care they need.

Addressing the Misconceptions +

misconceptions

Teens and children may be more traditional orthodontics patients, but that doesn’t mean they are the only ones eligible for care. Adults are also able to correct tooth alignment. If there are underlying conditions, they may need to be treated first, but treatment is still possible.

Traditional metal braces are associated with teens and therefor may appear juvenile. However, adult patients have many different types of braces to choose from. There are many options that are professional in appearance or even hidden from view.

Now, when it comes to cost, we know that orthodontic treatment isn’t a bargain. Still, there are ways we make it more affordable. From insurance billing to discounts when you pay in full, we know how to make the care you need fit your budget. Think of treatment as an investment in yourself.

What our Patient’s Say!

Benjamin D

I thought my teeth were not that bad. But after a friend told me that I might need braces because I had gaps in between some of my teeth that never really bothered me because at that time I was only 12 years old. I asked her where she got her braces and she told me she went to Alpan Orthodontics. At that time, we had no insurance so my parents asked the receptionist if they have financing and how much the interest rate is. She said they have zero percent financing so my parents were glad about this. Now I’m glad I listened to my friend’s advice on getting braces because everybody tells me how beautiful my smile is. Thanks so much Alpan Orthodontics!

John M.

My classmates used to make fun of my teeth at school because they were crooked and ugly. I was feeling so depressed and I didn’t want to go out anymore. My dad saw an ad on the newspaper for Alpan Orthodontics and asked me if I would like to go for a consultation. I didn’t have to wait long for the doctor to see me, she was very nice and she explained the procedure to me and made it easy to understand. Now after two years of treatment, my teeth are all straight, my confidence came back and I feel great every time I go out. All thanks to Alpan Orthodontics and their staff.

I was not happy with my smile a few years ago. I felt embarrassed because I had crooked teeth and I was afraid to smile sometimes. My mom suggested I get braces to correct my smile. She had heard really good things about Alpan Orthodontics so she decided to take me there. The doctor was very nice and friendly and she explained how my treatment will be. I decided to start my treatment that very same day. My teeth are perfect! I am no longer embarrassed to smile. Thank you Alpan Orthodontics!
